What if the estate of a Regency mansion was transformed into a destination for sustainable heritage tourism?

Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens

Masterplan & Vision

  • The Irish Heritage Trust

  • January 2024 - Ongoing

  • €70,000

Studio Myco are currently leading a multidisciplinary team of economists, transport consultants and horticulturalists to create a vision, business case and phased implementation plan for a world class heritage visitor attraction at Fota House, Gardens & Arboretum on Fota Island, County Cork.

The Plan has been commissioned by the Irish Heritage Trust, who currently share custody of the estate with the Office for Public Works, and must take cognisance of the latest international trends in sustainable heritage tourism and the Trust’s ethos of “People Place Participation”.

The Plan will include strategic decisions on potential land and building uses for the site, incorporate sustainable development of existing built and natural assets, whilst offering a unique visitor experience to be enjoyed by visitors, members and the wider community.

In addition, due to the proximity of existing stakeholders to the estate, including Fota Wildlife Park, possible linkages, synergies and partnerships will be explored through co-design workshops, whilst tourism potential and opportunities for the area will be discussed with Failte Ireland and Cork County Council.
