Cork County Council appointed Studio Myco to develop a Heritage-led Regeneration Plan for Passage West town centre, a historic port town on the west bank of Cork Harbour. With a strong maritime legacy as the birthplace of Ireland’s first steamship, Passage West has a unique character but faces challenges such as vacancy, dereliction, car dominance, and a disconnect from its waterfront.

A heritage-led regeneration plan to transform Passage West into an Attractive, Vibrant, and Connected town centre.

This plan, developed in line with the Historic Towns Initiative and Town Centre First Policy, was informed by extensive community engagement and in-depth research. It sets out a vision to enhance the town’s historic fabric, create a more welcoming public realm, and reconnect people with the waterfront. Key objectives include revitalising streetscapes, activating underused buildings and spaces, and strengthening connections between residents, visitors, and heritage assets.

A series of transformative projects have been identified, including improvements to the town centre, the creation of a ‘Maritime Mile’ along the waterfront, and the repurposing of the historic railway tunnel into a pedestrian-friendly rail trail. These initiatives aim to foster economic, social, and cultural renewal while ensuring Passage West’s unique identity is preserved and celebrated. A detailed action plan provides a clear framework for implementation, guiding the town’s regeneration towards a more sustainable and dynamic future.
